As we step into a new year, there is a real sense of excitement building both behind and in front of the curtain at Theatre 605 all across South Dakota. 2026 is shaping up to be a year filled with meaningful milestones, powerful storytelling, and thoughtful growth across all areas of our work. From moments of celebration on stage to important investments behind the scenes, and for the thousands of people at the heart of our work, we are eager to share what lies ahead.

A Historic 80th Season for the Black Hills Playhouse
The summer of 2026 marks a truly incredible milestone for our historic summer stock theatre, the Black Hills Playhouse, as it celebrates its 80th season. Summer stock is a uniquely American tradition of seasonal, rural theatres, which developed through the 60’s. Back in the day, Broadway theaters closed during the summer because there was no air conditioning. Rural theaters developed, serving as crucial stepping stones for actors, directors, and designers in their professional development, offering hands-on experience and networking opportunities.
Our founder, Dr. Warren M. Lee, affectionately known as “Doc Lee,” dreamt of a place in South Dakota where professional actors and emerging artists could work, providing high-quality theatre for visitors to Custer State Park. We are so proud to continue this tradition today. This iconic South Dakota cultural location brings creative professionals together in a collaborative workspace, unique among the pines and wildlife.
Thousands of artists have benefited from employment and networking at the Black Hills Playhouse. Alums will converge from July 24-26th this summer to celebrate the 80th anniversary. The Black Hills Playhouse Alumni Association invites alumni to Come From Away to remember Doc’s legacy, celebrate this milestone together, and get a sneak peek at plans for the future! We encourage folks to get registered and make reservations to join us. More info (bhpaa.org)

Investing in Safety and Sustainability Behind the Curtain
While audiences experience the magic on stage, meaningful work continues behind the curtain at the Black Hills Playhouse campus. Theatre 605 is making essential safety and infrastructure updates to ensure a secure and supportive environment for the artists, staff, and audiences who live and work on campus each summer. These improvements reflect our deep commitment to stewardship and preserving the Playhouse as a creative home for years to come. Read more about this initiative here.
America’s 250th South Dakota
Titled 250 Years and Counting, this landmark season will feature four plays presented in honor of the United States’ Semiquincentennial, reflecting on our shared history while celebrating the lasting role theatre plays in American culture. We are also proud to share that Theatre 605 is an official partner of America’s 250th South Dakota, highlighting the unique ways South Dakota has helped shape the nation’s story over the past 250 years. As the only professional theatre company in South Dakota and one of the oldest summer stock theatres in the country, this anniversary season stands as both a tribute to the nation and a celebration of over eight decades of theatre in the Black Hills.

Theatre 605 Jr. Camps Heads to Vermillion
Theatre 605 Jr. Camps, which is celebrating its 10-year anniversary, will welcome an exciting change of scenery in 2026. Our summer camps are officially moving to the University of South Dakota (USD) campus in Vermillion! This transition will allow campers to work in a professional theatre facility and connect with a broader range of artists, enriching their overall experience.
Both Jr. Camps will take place during the week of July 19–25, 2026, for one memorable week of creativity and collaboration, culminating in a showcase performance on Saturday. While the beautiful forest setting at Placerville will be missed, we are thrilled about the opportunities this new location offers. Keep an eye out, registration and scholarship applications open February 1!
Tours Hits the Road With an Old Favorite, as Well as a Brand New Play
In 2026, Theatre 605 Tours will once again hit the road with an old favorite, You Look Marvelous, as well as a brand new production, Space Pirates. You Look Marvelous, by cg miller, offers a witty take on Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” highlighting the dangers of vanity and greed. Space Pirates tells a swashbuckling story that promotes friendship, self-discovery, curiosity, and teamwork, complemented by a lively soundtrack of pirate shanties and alien ballads that celebrate the uniqueness of everyone.
Now in our 26th year, Theatre 605 Tours continues our commitment to accessibility and outreach by bringing high-quality theatre directly to communities large and small across the region. Filled with imagination, adventure, and heart, Space Pirates will invite audiences of all ages to experience the joy of live performance.

Expanding Stage is Set to Ignite Creativity This Spring
Expanding Stage is preparing to hit the stage once again this spring in collaboration with DakotAbilities in Sioux Falls! These performances are always memorable, characterized by a deep sense of artistry and collaboration. We can’t wait to see what stories will be brought to life through this engaging program.
This program is unique in that every theatre aspect is adapted to ensure success for people of all abilities on stage. During auditions, each individual is assessed to determine the technology and teaching methods that will be most effective for them to shine on stage. Theatre 605 teaching artists have an entire arsenal of tools and tips to enhance the experience. Participants become more independent by learning to express themselves in new ways. Look for announcements soon about the new show starting rehearsals in March!
2026 is already shaping up to be a memorable year. We look forward to sharing these moments with you and welcoming you into the world of Theatre 605 throughout our programming this year.
