Theatre 605 has had an unforgettable summer all across the state. From celebrating the 10-year anniversary of Theatre 605 Jr. Camps to celebrating 250 years of the United States of America, it was a historic summer in more ways than one. Take a walk down memory lane with us to recount all the ways we told stories that matter and changed lives through art.
A Historic Season at the Black Hills Playhouse
This summer, Theatre 605 Black Hills Playhouse held its 80th season, with the theme 250 Years And Counting – Celebrating America’s Past, Present, and Imperfect Progress. This was in celebration of the 250th anniversary since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Dan Workman, Artistic Director of the Black Hills Playhouse, shared his thoughts about the season’s theme.
“Part of the beauty of this country is that it was designed to be a work in progress. I think our founding fathers knew they couldn’t account for every eventuality, so they included the ability to adapt through constitutional amendments. We are celebrating this beautiful nation by putting on four productions, each with its own take and point of view. Each show presents part of our history through a different lens. Perfection is something to strive for, and we are always trying to make progress; sometimes we do it better than at other times,” said Dan.
This season, audiences were given an opportunity to immerse themselves in four uniquely American stories. Reactions to each of our season’s plays were as diverse as our nation is, and we are thankful to everyone who shared their opinion with us. This is a core tenet of theatre—to step into someone else’s shoes and experience the world differently. To our amazing audiences, thank you for experiencing this historic season with us, and for adding to the magic of live theatre.

The Complete History of America (abridged)
This political satire was written as an equal-opportunity lampoon of many topics. While some found it hilarious, others were taken aback by its irreverence. We leaned into comments from our patrons received in surveys after each show to demonstrate the polarization of thought in our communities. Both praise and criticism were valid, and we appreciated the discussions.
1776
The 250th celebrates the signing of the Declaration of Independence, so what could be more appropriate? A good reminder of the sacrifices real people made to make it happen–they stood up for what they believed in and did the work.
Come From Away
Many were surprised by how close to the surface feelings about 9/11 remain. Such an important message of kindness and generosity, which speaks directly to the times we live in.
What the Constitution Means to Me
This play provided an engaging way for teens and adults to review the Constitution and consider what it means for today. Loved that folks went home with their own pocket Constitutions! An engaged and educated citizenry is essential to our democracy.

Ten Years of Theatre 605 Jr. Camps
This summer, Theatre 605 celebrated 10 years of our annual performing arts camps. There’s something truly special about a place where young people discover their voices and find their people. For a decade now, Theatre 605 Jr. Camps has been exactly that kind of place for young artists from South Dakota and beyond. This milestone summer brought a big and exciting change: Theatre 605 Jr. Camps moved to a new home on the University of South Dakota campus in Vermillion, South Dakota.
This move was thoughtfully planned with our campers in mind. At USD, campers spent a week rehearsing and performing in a professional theatre facility. The kind of real performing arts venue that gives young artists an authentic, immersive experience of what it truly means to work in theatre. Campers benefited from expanded learning opportunities through a partnership with USD theatre faculty, bringing even more expertise and inspiration into the room.
We believe youth need exposure to performing arts venues as they explore their craft. This new chapter reflects our continued commitment to giving young artists the very best environment in which to grow. We welcomed 80 campers to Vermillion, and it was an unforgettable experience.
Out and About with Theatre 605 Tours
This summer, Theatre 605 Tours visited more than 15 communities across South Dakota, including our second year hosting a two-week day camp at Rapid City’s Storybook Island. Bringing the power of theatre to communities that may otherwise not have the chance to experience it is something we hold close to our hearts, and this milestone means even more as we celebrate 27 years of Tours.
We are continually humbled by the warm reception our touring directors and actors receive in every community they visit. None of this would be possible without the amazing actors who spent the summer driving across the state, bringing stories to life wherever they went. Thank you for your hard work and dedication. We are so proud of you.
Looking Forward
As we look forward to the fall and beyond, we have so many great things to look forward to. Expanding Stage has partnered with DakotAbilities for fall performances taking place this October! With the announcement of the Black Hills Playhouse’s 81st season, seasonal employment will open at the end of the year, with auditions held in early 2027. Plus so much more.
